Loggerhead turtle nesting season has started, and we are super excited to have had the first turtle nest in Hervey Bay.
The season goes from November to March and the turtles will come up on the beaches to lay their eggs and there is some very important things to remember when this happens.
Turtles feel very vulnerable when emerging from the ocean, and often do it under the cover of darkness or early morning as they don't' feel as exposed to predation.
They are very aware of their surroundings when leaving the water and if you on the beach when a turtle is coming up there is some things you must do!

a. Stop moving and stand still and turn off all lights , phones and anything that emits light.
b. Don't make sound and remain where you are until the turtle has gotten to the sand dunes at the top of the beach
c. If the turtle has started throwing sand around you can slowly back away and let the turtle do her thing.
d. If you can get a gps location after your off the beach, and time, date then text the details to
0417 633 281.
DO NOT under any circumstances approach the turtle, due to the turtles being highly sensitive to everything around them you can startle them and they are a large animal that can hurt you.
If she is disturbed enough she won't lay and will go back out to sea and delay the egg laying process .
The turtles are not hurt or requiring rescuing or relocating and now is a very special time of year for the turtles and we can all do our bit by leaving them to do their thing.
